Guildford is medium-sized town located just 30 miles from London and is known as the county town of Surrey. Despite not being the size of a city, it still has a museum, cathedral, art gallery and park to offer, among many other sights and places to shop and relax. If you are visiting the town, there are plenty of hotels available around the town.
The town of Guildford is well known for its higher education campus, the University of Surrey, originally established as a polytechnic in 1891. It also enrolls many international students and places a priority on high-quality research. The campus itself is in a pleasantly picturesque location giving the University a different and more peaceful atmosphere than that of a campus in a city environment.
The University also has a high rate of employment following graduation, and as such alumni are highly sought after, with many connections with many companies in their respective industry. There are plenty of services on-site, which will cater to the needs of any student, regardless of your origins, age or interests. As the University has a strong technological background, so the campus offers computers available 24 hours a day.
The University also caters to students getting involved with sports, with outdoor and indoor sports available on-site, and cafés, canteens, shops, bars and all manner of places to relax in the evenings – or between lectures – so there’s no sign of boredom when looking for social activities. Student accommodation is also available from the University, which would almost make you think there’s even little reason to even leave the campus.
However, there’s still a lot more to offer which shouldn't be missed out on. There are shopping centres containing all of the big fashion chains, general and specialist food shops, restaurants, pubs or cafés, all of varying styles and menus, as well as an Odeon cinema right in the centre of town.
The town centre is quintessentially English, which can be seen in its fullest on Fridays and Saturdays, when the traditional and ever-regular markets take place, where you can buy local produce, meat, fish and other products.
Those who like a good pint, or a good night out with your favorite drink, there are many different kinds of pubs and bars, from the traditional pubs serving local real ales, to sports bars for getting together for the football match. There are also plenty of novel and fun themed nights, which so far have involved silent discos and beach parties to name just a couple. To carry on the night, there are also nightclubs to enjoy and dance the night away.
With its close proximity to London, transport to and from the city is short and regular to London Waterloo station and therefore can easily be reached from either Gatwick or Heathrow airport. If you’re traveling from another UK city, you can reach Guildford by coach, or alternatively the town can be reached on the A3; if you’re traveling long-distance, the A3 is connected to the M3 and M4 motorways.
