Oxford is an English city that is renowned the world over. Upon setting foot into the city, the history and pride is immediately visible and impossible to avoid. With a current population of around 150,000, it is a slightly smaller city, though the size is more than made up for with what is actually on offer as you explore. It is rich with theatres, restaurants and pubs, giving the city a very active and lively feel.
Much of the city’s culture is also hard to avoid; the river cruises, the Christ Church, and the Botanic Garden and the many other wonders all give the place its distinct feel. The city itself has been built up over the years through a consistent delivery of maintaining its position in the world as an academic elite, with a huge focus on many kinds of research.
The University of Oxford itself is notably very old compared with most Universities in the UK, and is consistently ranked as the best University in the UK, or indeed the world. Thus the University has a reputation for seeking talented and gifted students and guiding them towards a significant career and throughout its history, its students (of which there are around 18,000) and alumni have made vast breakthroughs in the fields of science, technology and medicine. Those students who show a lot of progress during their course also receive close personal support and supervision by the academic staff.
The University has a great deal of services on offer. The city shares over 100 libraries, with a network-based system designed for sharing all of the libraries’ books with each other electronically.
Anybody who is admitted into the University is treated to on-site health care, financial assistance and a number of different banks. In the centre, you can create a great outdoor city life with all of the opportunities available: infamous restaurants are located around the city, with many kinds of shops and local pubs to find in between; for sports, hobbies and interests of any variety, there are plenty societies for you outside of study time; and film fans will also be pleased with the cinemas found around Oxford.
Elsewhere in the city centre is an area condensed with high-quality hotels, restaurants and bars; a great place to spend your evenings out on the town with friends. As Oxford is so well-known for its theatres and galleries, it comes highly recommended to check out some of the plays currently showing in any of the multiple theatres.
As Oxford is a popular and sizeable town, it has a well-established public transport system, with railway services travelling from major cities all over the country. If you are arriving from overseas, it is possible to get a train from London Heathrow airport – the nearest major airport to Oxford – on one of the regular trains leaving through the day. If you are travelling to Oxford by car, it is easily accessible from many major motorways. Inside the city is a regular bus system, taking the residents and students to and from their places of work within the city around the clock, and it is never necessary to wait long.
