Canterbury is a town in the county of Kent and has built up over the years around the river Stour, now running directly through the town. The town of Canterbury, population 45,000, is one of those towns with a truly ancient and magical atmosphere, from the Roman city walls to the old cobbled streets found all across town. It is an excellent town for art culture and history, with an extensive collection of museums and galleries to be found by all those visiting the town. Vineyards and parks are also just some of the sights to be found in town. It is a particularly clean and well-looked after English town, with low crime rates and a pleasant presence of community throughout the town.
The University of Kent, located in Canterbury, is held in particularly high regard and has been voted as one of the top Universities in the UK in terms of student satisfaction of their degree. It has a huge student population of 18,000, with great diversity supporting students from all over the UK and, indeed, the world over. It is sometimes known as UKC due to its former name including the title “at Canterbury.” The main campus overlooks the town with very picturesque views, which in no small part likely contributes to the high level of satisfaction of its students. While it offers many different degrees to and qualification types to choose from, it specialises in providing flexibility for those who do not wish to work into too much of a niche during their student years.
Student life, similarly to those living permanently in Canterbury, is a very pleasant life. The University provides excellent services, such as plenty of places to eat and drink in the day and the evening. First-year students will have a chance to live in University-owned accommodation, taking off much of the pressure of finding a privately-owned house while you get settled in. The on-site library is also held to an excellent standard, with a huge database of books and journals within reach. For those looking for computers and other IT services, the library provides sufficient machines, so your reports and assignments can be typed up efficiently in its quiet and studious atmosphere.
All of the typical indoor and outdoor sports facilities are also provided, so those looking for activity will not be disappointed. Other services that the University provides to its students are careers and job advice, health care, shops, cash machines and student-run societies for whatever interests you.
Outside of the campus and into the historic town centre, there are plenty of shops about in the area for whatever needs suit you, from clothes to electronics to books to mobile phones and more. After a day's shopping, there are many different pubs and restaurants available, as well as a cinema and a shooting range for those who have ever been curious about trying out archery.
Although Canterbury is in the south-east side of the country, it is still a well connected town with plenty of options. As it is an hour and a half by train from London, anybody wishing to travel there from a long distance will always have the option of connecting at London before heading into the county of Kent.
