The University of Portsmouth, too, is quite a sight to behold and should not be missed by any travellers staying in the town for a short duration. The University was established in 1869, where it began its life as a polytechnic. From here, as the campus grew into a more significant and fully-established University, it has continued the trend of specialising in technical degrees, and takes on many technically-minded local and international students each year. There are two schools to be found in Portsmouth: one in the town centre, perfect for an urban and social environment; the other on the eastern side of Portsea Island.
There's no lack of things to try out at Portsmouth University, nor is there a lack of services and shops to help you get by during your student life. There's two separate sports centres which together offer a huge range of sports and fitness activities to try out. When it comes to shops, you won't have any problems finding what you want, regardless of whether you prefer family-owned shops for local goods and fresh food, or the convenient supermarket chains recognised all over the UK.
There's more to student life than what you need, of course, which is why Portsmouth offers all kinds of places to eat, from fancy restaurants to student-oriented eateries. Between them, of course, are many modern and traditional pubs found all over town, giving you a chance to sample the region's breweries on a night out. It's easy to create your social life when studying at Portsmouth, too, as there are various societies open to all students.
The University also provides career services, which helps students find all manner of jobs, whether it is an internal University job, a job around town to help fund yourself during your studies, or jobs for new and soon-to-be graduates. For those about to start their first year of study, student accommodation is also provided, providing an excellent opportunity to get to know your fellow students.
Outside the University, it's possible to fulfil your shopping needs at one of the three shopping centres found around the town. If it's a little chilly, or you simply don't find yourself in the mood for relaxing on the beach, there's always one of the multiple cinemas or casinos, too.
Getting into the town itself is a simple task, as Portsmouth offers all kinds of transportation options going in and out on a regular basis. There is a relatively well-connected train line in town coming from and going to many of the major cities around the south of England; even some reaching much further north in the country. It is well connected by road, too, and transport inside the town is made easy with its readily available buses and taxis.
